Evaluating online disaster preparedness training for family caregivers of senior citizens

March 9, 2015 by tcc2015 Leave a Comment

Session Description
According to the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), more than half of the casualties from Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy were senior citizens, and many died from avoidable injuries. As climate change is predicted to increase the frequency and intensity of natural hazards such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods, communities must plan for an increasing senior population with many now opting to live with their adult children. Seniors are more vulnerable to hazards due to economic, medical, social, cognitive, and physical issues. Precautions taken in advance of disasters can greatly reduce senior citizen casualties. Having an understanding of disaster preparedness is key to building resilience and mitigating impacts.

Family members who take on caregiving responsibilities may not have access to or time for formal training in disaster preparedness. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an online module, created with Articulate and Canvas, to train participants on the special preparedness needs of elderly family members. Participants completed the module, including pre- and post-surveys and an assessment. The project used Baldwin and Ford’s transfer of training theory,. Participants can use the knowledge gained from the module to enhance their ability to support senior citizens. The presentation will show parts of the module and discuss the findings from the evaluation.

Multiple-Intelligences Theory Applied to Online Course Delivery

March 9, 2015 by tcc2015 Leave a Comment

Session Description
Online courses appeal to students because of the flexibility and access available. However, online courses are often structured as one size fits all, ignoring the distinctive learning styles students possess. This presentation discusses the use of multiple-intelligences theory as an alternative approach to allow students to utilize their best means of learning. It also examines the question of assessing the individual work of the student compared to the standardized grading approach that compares one student against another.

From On-Air to On-Line: Challenges in Institutional Paradigm Shift at the Open University of Japan

March 8, 2015 by tcc2015 Leave a Comment

Session Description
Though online education has become commonplace in higher education in U.S., it’s still not very common in higher education in Japan, primarily due to the fact that the organizational structures of higher education institutions are too rigid and inertia prevails in their day-to-day operations. In this presentation, as a case study of the institutional struggle in offering online courses in a university in Japan, the recent attempts by the Open University of Japan (OUJ), the only open university which broadcast its courses over the air, to offer its first online courses, are described and the issues of Japanese higher education institutions as well as the unique characteristics of OUJ are discussed to give audience the cultural and organizational frameworks in considering higher education in Japan.

A Handbook for Creating Engaging and Effective Online Courses

March 8, 2015 by tcc2015 Leave a Comment

Session Description
An Online Course Design Handbook (OCDH) was created to systematize an existing design process at a large for-profit university. The OCDH is based on the Backward Design Model (Wiggins & McTighe, 2005) and infuses the principles of the ARCS Motivation Model (Keller, 2010). Participants in this session will learn about the challenges and successes of a pilot of the OCDH pilot in 2014 as the primary resource for faculty and staff involved in the process of online course design. Participants will receive a tour of the OCDH including its more than than twenty supporting worksheets and guides!
