Reima AL-JARF
Professor, King Saud University

Reima Al-Jarf has taught ESL, ESP and translation for 26 years. She has published 6 books, 160 book chapters, encyclopedia and journals articles in peer-reviewed international and national journals and conference proceedings. She has given 295 conference presentations and 40 workshops in 60 countries. She has been presenting at TCC since 2007 (16 presentations). She is a member of 22 international and national professional organizations. She reviews articles for numerous peer-reviewed international journals including some ISI journals. Kumiko AOKI, Ph.D.
The Open University of Japan

I graduated from the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa with Ph.D. in Communication and Information Sciences in 1995. Since then, I taught at the Department of Information Technology, Rochester Institute of Technology, and the College of Communication, Boston University. I went back to my home country, Japan, in January 2004. Since then, I was Associate Professor, the National Institute of Multimedia Education (NIME), until 2009 and then Professor of Informatics, the Open University of Japan. I’m also Professor, the Center of Open and Distance Education (CODE) where I research and develop online education and e-learning. My current research interests include online education and competency-based education.

  Kimberly AVERY
Administrator, Art Institute of Pittsburgh – Online Division
Growing up I was always into art and would find any way to spend my free time working on my artwork. Naturally this lead me to Edinboro University of Pennsylvania to start 2D Traditional Animation and where I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts/Applied Media Arts. I worked several jobs after graduation focusing on Visual Merchandising and continuing my artwork until I decided to go back to school for a Master’s degree in Education focusing on Adult Education/eLearning with a Education Technology Certificate. I have been an online facilitator and currently an administrator for 10 years with the Art Institute of Pittsburgh Online Division. My focus has been in faculty training and development and I most recently took on student facing initiatives focusing on student retention, training and development. I also work as an adjunct instructor and technology center tutor for Kaplan University.

Danilo M. BAYLEN
Professor of Instructional Technology, University of West Georgia

Danilo M. Baylen is a Professor of Instructional Technology at the University of West Georgia. He received his graduate degrees in Instructional Technology, Library and Information Studies, Elementary Education, and Counseling. Prior to joining the UWG faculty, he was an instructional designer and assistant professor at Florida Gulf Coast University, director of Instructional Technology Services at the University of Akron, and coordinator of the Center for Instructional Design and Development at the Ohio State University Mansfield. He has published articles, book chapters and papers, and presented on technology integration practices, online teaching and learning, and faculty development. He just co-edited a book, Essentials of Teaching and Integrating Visual and Media Literacy – Visualizing Learning, that will be published by Springer in spring 2015.

  Jennifer BEAMER

Jennifer is the Educational Specialist for the UH Institutional Repository – ScholarSpace and the former Project Manager for the Hawaii Digital Newspaper Project, a Lecturer for FDM, a and Technology and Information Advocate. She holds a Master of Library and Information Science degree and was a certified Apple Mobile Specialist and is working on building her own Apps. She has been employed for the past 10 years at Universities in Canada, the USA and Japan, conducting research and teaching.

  Trevor BELCHER
Asst. Professor, Ashford University

Dr. Belcher has been with Ashford University since 2012. Over most of the past two decades, his educational and practical experience have allowed him the opportunity to serve in various capacities such as pastoral ministry, counseling, consulting, teaching, and administration. Previously he was a faculty member and an Associate Dean at Kaplan University and held administrative positions at Patten University and at New Charter University. He has a PhD and MS in Psychology from Capella University and a BS with a double major in Ministry and Theology from Mid-America Christian University.   Brenda CANINE
NANSLO Laboratory Manager, Great Falls College, Montana State University

Brenda Canine is the NANSLO lab manager at Great Falls College Montana State University in Great Falls, Montana. She has also been an adjunct instructor at GFCMSU teaching microbiology and chemistry. Before joining the NANSLO team, she was a research scientist at the McLaughlin Research Institute studying the genetics of neurodegenerative diseases. Canine holds a Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences, a B.S. in chemical engineering, and has experience working in private, government, and industry labs.

Marla CARTWRIGHT
Faculty Developer, Kaplan University

Marla Cartwright, M.A., English, is a Faculty Developer with Kaplan University’s Center for Teaching and Learning. She has been teaching at the college level for over 16 years, serving over a decade at KU, receiving the 2006 Vice President’s award and the 2013 Kaplan Way Leadership Award. Marla also has a background in publishing including general assignment reporter for the metro daily newspaper, The Nashville Banner, regional magazines as well as the book "Deny All Knowledge: Reading the X-Files". Her 20+ years of online experience stems from serving as a Community Producer and Community Manager at the Manhattan-based internet company, iVillage.com.

In addition to interests in teaching, faculty development and research, Marla also has a life-long interest in science fiction and horror, particularly in film and television analysis. Her presentations in this area include: "Iron John" Locke: The Mythological Implications of Lost, “Country Boy Can Survive”: Saving Sawyer of the TV show “Lost” and she combined an analysis of mythology and traditional folk tales in the essay, "You Don’t Know ‘Jack’: Literary Analysis of the Heroes of ’24’ and ‘Lost’" which she also published as a journal article. Most recently, Marla has been studying various character development arcs from The Walking Dead, resulting in the presentation: From Redneck to White Knight: The Heroic Development of Daryl Dixon in "The Walking Dead".

  Desiree DePRIEST
Professor, Kaplan University

Hello, I am Desiree DePriest. I am an IT and instructional design professor having worked at Kaplan for ten years. My expertise is in information systems and telecommunications in business environments. I hold a Ph.D., in Management & Organization with emphasis in Information Technology, along with two masters degrees (Telecom and IS respectively). I have a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology along with a three year experience in law school (I hated it) which assists greatly in the various areas of business intelligence, policies and regulations. I recently created KapTechnology which is an internship department for IT students within KapConsulting. I also created the Graduate Information Technology Association (GITA) and serve as Faculty Advisor. I love working extensively with students applying learning to real-world projects. I am the Vice-chair of the IRB. My publications include research in persuasive and predictive analytics, artificial intelligence and augmented reality and pattern recognition. I present throughout the year at conferences in these areas. I am the proud mother of 17-year old, boy and girl twins, who have been my reason to succeed and evolve. Last but not least, I am the author of a mythological book series titled, “Soul of Idrisa” on Amazon.com that has little to do with any of this!

  Veronica DIAZ
Director, EDUCAUSE Online Programs
Associate Director, EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative, EDUCAUSE

Veronica is the Director for EDUCAUSE online programs and ELI online portfolio that advances the Teaching, Learning, and Professional Development Department’s overall strategic priorities and serves member needs with excellence in online learning experiences. This includes program design and creation, program delivery, and advising senior leadership on methods for improving or enhancing member engagement and aligning services with member needs. Veronica has also been the associate director of the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative since 2009 conceptualizing and developing resources that support its 300+ member institutions in integrating teaching, learning, and technology on campus.   Kirsti DYER, MD, MS, FT
Madonna University and Columbia College

Dr. Kirsti A. Dyer MD, MS, FT is a physician, health educator, professor, online instructor, lecturer, author, and longtime online student. Dr. Dyer received her medical and master’s degrees from the University of California, Davis. Since having her two daughters, her focus has shifted from clinical practice to education, wellness, and health promotion. Dr. Dyer has taught an online graduate course in Grieving Family Systems for Madonna University since January 2007 and undergraduate courses in Hospice and Palliative Studies starting in 2014.
 
Dr. Dyer has been using online course tools since developing an enhanced Nutrition Course for Columbia College in January 2005. Her Nutrition course has been fully online in Blackboard since Fall 2008. She has also taught several online continuing education courses for Mount Ida as part of their National Center for Death Education program.

A bit about myself, my father owned the 10th largest printing company in the United States when I was growing up. This led me towards the graphics industry at an early age. After completing my undergraduate degree in Computer Aided Design/Realtime Simulation I began working as a technical trainer as well as a Web Designer, Game Designer, 3D Animator, and Professional trainer. I have been a professional trainer for over 17 years now and have held positions as Executive Dean of Online and Graduate, Dean of Curriculum, Faculty Chair and Professor. I hold a Master’s Degree is in Adult Education with emphasis on Distance Education and currently a PHD candidate (ABD) in Business Administration/E-Commerce.   Peter ESPERANZA
Teacher of Mathematics, Barstow High School

Peter Esperanza is a mathematics teacher in Barstow High School and an adjunct instructor in Barstow Community College. He has flipped his classroom in AP calculus, AP statistics, Precalculus, Algebra 1, and Alegbra2. In addition, he created www.numberbender.com as an open resource for math presentations, worksheets, and math video lecture/tutorial. At present, he is utilizing his website as a venue for his online classroom for blended learning.
 
Mr. Esperanza is currently a doctorate candidate on Education. He has taught in the Philippines and China prior to teaching in the United States. On his spare time, he occupies himself in sports activities like Parkour and Crossfit.

Stephanie Heald is a full-time faculty member at Ashford University’s College of Education. She has a Master’s degree in Education and a BA in Elementary Education from the State University of New York at Oneonta, an AAS in Early Childhood Education from the State University of New York at Cobleskill, and a dual advanced certificate in Building and District Level Educational Leadership from St. John’s University. She is a Ph.D. candidate currently at the University of the Rockies exploring research in the area of ePortfolios in online higher education.

Anne HEWITT
Associate Professor, Seton Hall University

Anne M. Hewitt, PhD is Graduate Program Director and Associate Professor for the Master of Healthcare Administration program at SHU and also serves as Director of the Seton Center for Community and Population Health. Dr. Hewitt, a national Community-Campus Partnership for Health Fellow, has received community grants from federal agencies, non-profit foundations, and state agencies to assess health care delivery and policies. She has numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and books. Her research interests include community health needs assessment and benefits, population health management, and social determinants of health. Dr. Hewitt has also published on the adoption, implementation and assessment of new learning technologies for graduate students.

    Dr. Irvine is a professor in the Department of Learning Design and Technology at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa. Her interest in technology goes back to her first experience taking a telenet course in 1986. She began teaching online in 1996. After serving as a dean of education at two institutions for more than a dozen years, Dr. Irvine returned to faculty in 2013 and currently teaches graduate courses in research.

      Nalin JOHRI
    Assistant Professor, Seton Hall University

    Nalin Johri, Ph.D., MPH is Assistant Professor in the Masters in Healthcare Administration program/ Dept. of Interprofessional Health Sciences and Healthcare Administration/ School of Health and Medical Sciences at Seton Hall University and teaches several courses, including Research Methods, Healthcare Economics, Healthcare Policy, Financial Management and Strategic Planning and Marketing. Dr. Johri’s work experience includes program development, monitoring and evaluation experience on maternal and child health and nutrition and prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV and spans over 10 years with NGOs such as CARE and EngenderHealth, Francois-Xavier Bagnoud Center at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey as well as consulting with UNICEF and until April 2013 he was the Impact Evaluation Advisor for USAID’s Palestinian Health Sector Reform Project.

    Therese KANAI, Ph.D. UOP/SAS
    Dr. Therese Kanai is from Kailua-Kona, Hawaii and has been involved in the field of education for the last twenty five years. She taught at Konawaena High School for over ten years and then helped to open Kealakehe High School in 1997. While teaching Dr. Kanai earned her MA from Heritage University and her PhD from Walden University. Dr. Kanai has taught in the online venue since 1998 while living in Kona. Her online teaching career began teaching at the undergraduate level and has developed into teaching at the graduate level, primarily assisting doctoral students who are working on their dissertation. In addition to teaching she presents at a number of educational conferences each year. Dr. Kanai’s passion is online education and she truly believes that is the venue for the future of education.

    Dr. Selia Karsten is retired from being a full time professor at Seneca College, School of Marketing and eBusiness. She has been serving as Sessional Lecturer Level II, University of Toronto, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, Curriculum Teaching and Learning Department since 2002.       Bert Y. Kimura

    Dr. Bert Kimura is a lecturer at the University of Hawaii, College of Education, Educational Technology Department. He also teaches at Kansai University in Osaka, Japan. He is actively engaged in research on ubiquitous learning technologies, electronic portfolios, and Internet based communication tools.

    Recently, Dr. Kimura was a professor in the International Center at Osaka Gakuin University in Japan. He taught oral communications and special topics classes in English to native Japanese speakers. He also served as a consultant in educational technology and e-learning.

    Dr. Kimura coordinates the TCC Online Conference, a worldwide online conference for 1,400 professors, librarians, information technology support specialists, administrators and student services personnel. This conference, conducted annually entirely online, highlights issues, challenges, directions and the use of the Internet in online learning, as well as in “hybrid” face-to-face classes (http://tcc.kcc.hawaii.edu).

    Dr. Kimura is Emeritus Professor at the University of Hawai’i, Kapi’olani Community College (KCC) where he served as chair of the Information, Media & Technology Services (IMTS) department. Currently, he also serves as a Faculty Consultant & Lecturer for the Educational Technology Department at the University of Hawaii at Manoa College of Education. At KCC, he previously coordinated KITE, Kapiolani’s Information Technology Emphasis, a campus-wide initiative to integrate information technology across the curriculum. He is a past president of the Hawai’i 4-H Alumni Association, a group affiliated with the UH College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources.

    IMTS provided campus-wide technical support and services to faculty and staff to enhance and improve the quality of student learning. IMTS staff provided a wide range of services including printing and duplication, computer and audiovisual equipment repair, distance learning, instructional development, academic computing, data network and telecom management, server administration, and technology workshops for faculty and staff.

    Dr. Kimura served as campus representative to WCET, the Western Cooperative for Educational Telecommunications, and CCUMC, the Consortium of College and University Media Centers. He served on the League for Innovation’s Microsoft/Compaq Community College Advisory Council.

    Dr. Kimura has also worked closely with Hawaii’s teachers and secondary schools. He served as advisory board member and higher education partner with the Aiea High School complex in the School-to-Work Opportunities initiative and as advisory board member for Moanalua High School’s Media Communications Learning Center.

      Anne KU, UHMC
    Anne Ku teaches music at University of Hawai‘i Maui College, where she was also director of the federally-funded electric vehicle project that led Maui to achieve one of the highest concentrations of EVs per capita. A three-time winner of University of Hawai‘i Community College innovation grants, Anne continues to look for out-of-the-box solutions to improve student success. She holds a Ph.D. in Decision Sciences from London Business School, M.Sc. in Operations Research from London School of Economics, B.S.E. in Electrical Engineering from Duke University, and B. Music in Composition and Teaching Diploma in Piano from Utrecht Conservatory.

      Burt LUM
    Executive Director, Hawaii Open Data

    Burt Lum is Executive Director of Hawaii Open Data, a non-profit dedicated to advancing the principles of open knowledge in Hawaii, including policy work and community collaborations. He has more than 30 years in Hawaii’s technology and communications sector, is an Instructor at University of Hawai‘i in the Information & Computer Science Dept. teaching Intro to Social Media and an Instructor at the National Disaster Preparedness Training Center.
     
    At the City and County of Honolulu, he was the City’s Community Manager for their Open Data – Citizen Engagement Initiative.     Anne Miller has been teaching and presenting on issues related to developmental education since 1995. Returning to school in 1998, she earned her BA in English and Linguistics at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo in 2002 and her MA in Linguistics from Stony Brook University in 2005. During grad school, she taught, as adjunct faculty, graduate level courses in Language Acquisition and Literacy Development, and sociolinguistics; and face-to-face and online undergraduate courses in first year composition, ESL, and literacy development, and was involved in the Even Start Family Literacy program on Long Island, NY.       Karen PEDERSEN
    Chief Knowledge Officer, Online Learning Consortium

    Dr. Karen Pedersen recently stepped into the role as Chief Knowledge Officer for the Online Learning Consortium (OLC). Prior to joining OLC, Pedersen served as the Associate Vice President for Extended Campuses at Northern Arizona University. In this role she was responsible for leading a system-wide enrollment management transformation as well as managing marketing, technology, and academic operations. Previously, she served as the Vice President for Professional Studies at Southwestern College (Kansas) for eleven years. Her responsibilities included envisioning and building an online program from the ground up (including seeking regional accreditation approval) and launching over 25 innovative online programs. Additionally, Pedersen had responsibility for expanding military partnerships, engaging in strategic infrastructure projects, as well as positioning the institution in an enrollment growth trajectory. Pedersen also held the academic associate and dean roles at Upper Iowa University’s Extended University. In these roles she was responsible for curriculum development, supporting academic issues, learner success, as well as faculty hiring, training, and evaluation. She also built the foundations for an online operation and traveled internationally to develop partnerships in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Malaysia while at UIU. Prior to starting her administrative career, Pedersen served as a faculty member at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Pedersen holds bachelor of science and master of science degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a doctor of philosophy degree from Oklahoma State University.

    Dr. Paul Posadzki works as a Research Fellow in eLearning, Health Services and Outcomes Research at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine. He previously worked as a researcher at the Centre of Public Health, Liverpool John Moores University, Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine, in Daejeon, South Korea, University of Exeter, Peninsula Medical School and University of East Anglia (Norwich Medical School).
     
    His research falls into the following categories: systematic reviews and meta-analyses, eLearning, public health, preventive medicine, psychosomatic medicine, psychosocial health, research and practice of pain, the placebo effect; and safety and effectiveness of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM).     Maria has significant national and international experience in management, staff development and technology enhanced learning and its applications in training and teaching and learning. She has successfully held leading posts for international private and public corporations and leading higher education academic institutions in Venezuela, Spain, USA and the UK. She has led consultancy for international training and learning interventions with organisations such as UNESCO, the World Bank, Organisation of American States (OAS), the British Council and the European Union.

    Michael Schulz is currently an Instructional Designer III with a passion for education and technology and over 20 years’ experience in design and management in fast-paced and intense environments. Prior to working with the University of the Rockies, Michael has worked in education as an Online Instructional Designer/Media Developer, Curriculum Development Manager and Director of Instructional Design. He has also spent many years as a Graphic Designer, artist and working in various roles in the medical research industry. In the online classroom, Michael has a passion for finding innovative ways to promote student engagement and involvement while striving for a sense of collaboration and inclusion among his co-workers.
